ALL-TIME AUSSIE PARTY FAVOURITE – FAIRY BREAD 

Have you heard the term “fairy bread” and wondered what it is and how to make it?  

INTRODUCTION—Fairy Bread!

The all-time party menu favourite here in Australia.

This is such a fun and easy treat to make at any time! Not just for parties.

It is also great for children to practice spreading butter/margarine on the slices of bread, and being a no-bake recipe, it is safe for them to make this treat anytime.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Slices of bread
  • Non-parallels (Traditionally used, but you can use splinters too)
  • Butter knife
  • and cutters to make it super fun (cookie cutters, sandwich cutters)
  • A tray of some sort to catch the little balls or sprinkles

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Have all the equipment ready.
  2. Grab the slices of bread and lay them out on the tray (or bench) (wheat or gluten-free)
  3. Using the butter knife, spread an even layer of margarine (or butter/dairy-free margarine)
  4. Open the sprinkle topping container and evenly sprinkle the non-parallels (or splinter) over the margarine. If it is a large open container, you can use a spoon or your fingers to sprinkle a layer of sprinkles over the bread.
  5. Traditionally, cut the slices of bread into two or four triangles or make it fun by using cookie cutters/ sandwich cutters to create fun shapes to eat.
  6. Put the ingredients that are finished with away.
  7. Enjoy the super fun treat!

Spreading the margarine on a slice of bread is an eye coordination and gross motor skill activity.

Sprinkling the sprinkles on top – is a fine motor skill activity if they use their fingers to pinch the sprinkles and then sprinkle over the slice of bread.

Notes

  • For gluten allergies, you can substitute the bread for slices of gluten-free bread and look for gluten-free sprinkles, too.
  • If there is a dairy allergy, please swap for a non-dairy margarine (In Australia, there is Nutellex which is dairy-free)
